The fault diagnosis function of optical transceiver module (Digital Diagnostic Monitor, DDM) provides a means for monitoring the system performance; it can help the management system to predict use life of fiber module, isolate fault from the system and verify compatibility in field installation.

The real-time monitoring of working voltage and temperature of the optical transceiver module will help the system administrator to find some potential problems: 1) Too high Vcc voltage will bring breakdown for CMOS devices; Vcc voltage is too low, the laser cannot work normally. 2) The received power is too high will damage the receiver module. 3) The work temperature is too high will accelerate the aging of the component. In addition, via the monitoring of received optical power, it will realize the monitoring of line and performance of the remote transmitter.

The fault can be located by digital diagnostic function. In fault location, Tx_power, Rx_power, Temp, Vcc and Tx_Bias warning and alarm status should be comprehensively analyzed. The state variables Tx Fault and Rx LOS (loss of signal) in the memory mirror play an important role in the faults analysis.

Another function of Digital Diagnostic Monitor (DDM) is compatibility verification of the optical module. Compatibility verification is to analyze whether the working environment of the module conforms to the data book or relevant standards. Fiber Optic Transceiver performance is guaranteed only in this compatible work environment. In some cases, if the environmental parameters beyond the data book or related standards, it will bring performance degradation for the optical transceiver and resulting in transmission error code. There are some situation of working environment is not compatible with the optical module: 1) the voltage exceeds the specified range; 2) receiving optical power overload or below the receiver sensitivity; 3) the temperature is beyond the operating temperature range.
